2020.09.22 11:32 Born57 Amazon selling G9 in Europe?

Dear Europeans...
has anybody received a G9 from Amazon recently?
My first order from June has been cancelled early August.
Then again open for order about 2 weeks ago, but still no ship date...

So, i wonder if Amazon has sold any G9s recently! If so, what manufacturing date?

2020.09.22 09:07 Jesper1989 Advice for 30 year-old male

Here is what I have as of date:
Stocks in low PE blue chips trading near the bottom of their 5/10 year price 35K
P2P Lending (SeedIn) 15K
UITF per VUL (to be funded up to Q1 2022) 240K
Cash spread out in 3 banks + Paymaya/GCash 550K
Question 1 I’m planning to increase my stock portfolio to 100K by Q2 2021. Do you think this is advisable? I just started stock investing this year in order to take advantage of the depressed stock market. My time horizon really for stocks is long-term, I could hold them for at least 5 years, or even more, subject of course to some intermittent profit-taking when price is super favorable for some stocks.
Question 2 Do you think I could do the same safely with SeedIn? So far, no one has defaulted in the platform yet, but it only takes one bad investment to screw up my returns. Realistically speaking, I could only earn 9-10% (net of WTH) interest from this, as most of the projects are in the 11-13% range. Do you think those returns are commendurate with the risk? Up to how much could I safely put in?
Question 3 I’m living with my 2 senior parents, one of which is still working. How much should I have saved as EF for their medical expenses?
Question 4 Do you think I should invest in real estate now? Or perhaps I wait for Q1 2022 when I finish my VUL payments (the VUL really is a mistake, I should have done BTID if I knew it back then, but oh well)
Question 5 Should I bother with MP2? Given that I have some diversification with the VUL already and that I set aside a certain portion of my salary every month anyway, what could I gain from investing in it?
My ultimate goal is to be financially independent by my mid to late 40s and perhaps buy some property in a less costly European country such as Portugal. Seen the prices and though fairly expensive, they’re just a notch higher than what you would find in BGC, e.g. 25-30M php for a 1-br apartment in a decent (not luxurious) area.
These might not look attainable at the moment, but anything can really happen in 15-20 years time (better work opportunities, side gigs etc). Currently earning a little bit less than 100K monthly. Or probably what I need is a big slap in the face to stop dreaming?
Some other info: I previously lost 350-400k in a family business, so I could say that I’m no stranger to financial heartbreak :-( (would not want to experience it again of course)
I am a CPA and dabbled a bit in CFA, so I guess I have more investing knowledge (not wisdom, though) than the average Filipino. However, as you could see, I’m still inexperienced in terms of actual investing.

2020.09.22 07:11 DeathAwaitsYou Hives? Dermatitis? Covid? Outbreak after 5 days spent in airport + flight.

Age : 27 Weight : 80kgs
Ethnicity : South Asian /Light Brown / Pakistani
Underlying condition : Psoriasis, Chronic stress, Anxiety
Ex heavy smoker for 5 years (4 years since I quit cold turkey)
Recently had chicken pox (1 year ago)
Tested covid negative on the 11th September.
11th to 17th September was spent either in airports, hotel rooms or flying (Netherlands, Dubai and Pakistan). I first got these outbreaks the day after I landed for good and slept in my personal room in Pakistan (17th morning). Know that at this point I hadn't eaten Pakistani food yet until the next day after my symptoms.
I had also switched my diet from bland European food to traditional South Asian spicy food after 8 months. Tiny itchy bumps formed slow at the back of my wrists and forearms like bed bug bites but then progressed to my hands and each one of my fingers over the course of two days. I also ate something a little too spicy leading in indigestion and bloating resulting in diarrhea and puking (stomach's fine now).
Yesterday it progressed to my neck, lower and upper back. I even have a tiny bump on my lower lip and both my ears. I took zyrtec but it didn't help.
The itchiness in fingers went away yesterday morning but came back stronger in the afternoon and now continues to persist. It's spreading fast.
I've kept myself in quarantine ever since.
Ps: I don't show classical covid symptoms but can't help but think I've got it. Mainly because I shared a closed space with over 50 people in breathing distance on one instance and over 200 people in two other instances (flights). I was one of the many few people who actually wore masks. Also read reports of immune system kicking in overdrive resulting in similar symptoms.
I also don't think it's cause of bed bugs since I've yet to find a single one and my bumps keep appearing even when I'm out of my room.
Attached images: http://imgur.com/gallery/4iaxrKp
Edit : the last two pictures were taken yesterday (21st September) while the rest were taken today. The dates and description are all messed up in imgur and I can't edit them for some reason.

2020.09.22 06:05 BalkanBlue 26 [M4F] Canada/Online - I meant to post this during the day and now it's too late for people in my time zone (EST).

I've given up on dating during this pandemic. Dating apps are awful and I'm not going anywhere to meet people anytime soon. I still really enjoy talking to new people so R4R is going to have to fill that void for now.
I'm from Canada and currently staying in Canada, but I work in the US. I've been working remotely for a while now. COVID has kind of messed that all up as I wanted to get out of this state of remote working limbo I'm in. I love my job but I missed being around friends and family. I don't think I can go back to living alone far away. I have degrees in two almost completely unrelated fields so I think I'll be able to find work back in Canada too.
Let's be real, attraction plays a part of this whole thing for some people, even if it's just for friends. I'm good looking enough that I don't really worry about it being an issue. Everyone has their types, if I'm not yours that's fine. My background is European (guess which area). I'm on the leaner side, average height, pretty average in every way. But if our sense of humor matches I promise I'm funny. I'm open to sharing pictures once we've established you're not a complete weirdo. I'd prefer to know how you look sooner than later.
As for interests, I'll admit I've kind of lost a lot of my interests over the past few months, everything seems like a blur. The last fun thing I've done was go kayaking. I'm into all the usual stuff people are into. Forensic Files is the best show to keep on in the background when you're trying to go to sleep or just need some noise. I watched the first episode of the new Unsolved Mysteries series on Netflix. What show are you into right now? Maybe we can watch it together. I'm down for just about any conversation, I don't get upset when people have different opinions. I'm super open and I love hearing other peoples opinions and trying to understand them. Tell me your controversial opinion. Tell me about you.
If you've made it this far you might as well message me. ;)

2020.09.22 04:24 RadMoney1 ‘Psychedelic Capitalism’ a New Concern as the Psychedelics Industry Takes Shape

The psychedelics business is developing faster now than ever before, kicked off in earnest when the FDA granted a “breakthrough therapy” designation to Compass Pathways in October 2018 and has continued accelerating this year.
Compass Pathways (NASDAQ: CMPS) filed a patent for its psilocybin formulation in January, and in August, the company filed with the SEC to raise $100 million via an initial public offering (IPO) on the NASDAQ. This week, the company announced its IPO was upsized from $100 million to $127.5 million.
Compass officially went public on Friday, joining a growing group of biotech and life science healthcare companies that have also filed IPOs on the NASDAQ. In its inaugural trading session, shares of CMPS stock soared over 70%, easily becoming the most successful psychedelics IPO to date.
Then there is the uptick in research to back up product commercialization. The well-respected Johns Hopkins University is leading psychedelics medical breakthroughs at its Center for Psychedelics and Consciousness Research.
Legal obstacles to psychedelics development are being challenged and taken down. For example, psilocybin was decriminalized in Denver; decriminalized in Santa Cruz and Oakland, California; and, perhaps by this November, will be decriminalized in Washington, D.C. through the newly-created Initiative 81 “Yes on 81”, while at the same time becoming completely legalized in Oregon through Oregon Measure 109 “Yes on 109.”
More psychedelics business development deals are underway by a handful of other companies, some with big life science players.
Of particular note is the $30 million in non-profit donations raised in less than six months by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) for its non-profit Capstone Campaign to fund the final research required for U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Among the contributors to the fund are four foundations that would normally support mainstream medical causes, including the Bob and Renee Parsons Foundation, created by Bob Parsons, the founder of GoDaddy and PXG, and his wife Renee Parsons, president and creative director of PXG Apparel; and the Fournier Family Foundation, created by Alan Fournier, hedge fund manager and founder of Pennant Capital Investors.
Other contributors included Blue Ridge Capital, a real estate investment company, and Walden Venture Capital, who bill themselves as lead investors in first or early institutional rounds of financing after a company “has shown audacious progress on angel or seed capital.”
All of this funding was built under the auspices of the MAPS’ umbrella organization, the Psychedelic Science Funders Collaborative, which represents an organizing perspective that mirrors similar developments in mainstream life science, and gives additional credibility to psychedelics as a wellness treatment choice.
According to an article by a stock analyst at the Motley Fool, psychedelic medicine “has the potential to be a goldmine for early investors.”
But as more big business players get involved in the development of this industry, do they all know what they are getting into? Do they realize the significance of being part of a new movement in mental wellness involving the use of a formerly banned substance that is still fighting the stigma associated with it, and all of the other misinformation coming to it from over 50 years of misunderstanding psychedelics? Shouldn’t these new movers and shakers be held accountable to something higher than just capitalizing on the next new thing?
📷
Source: Shutterstock
One organization comprised of psychedelics advocates and business developers have proposed a pledge that attempts to hold the newcomers accountable. The North Star Ethics Pledge, described as “a first step in the demanding work of shaping the psychedelic industry around psychedelic wisdom,” has been created to help find shared values for the emerging psychedelic field and is expected to be used as a tool to “set and name the intention for this work.” Stakeholders have suggested creating a sort of seal from North Start that certifies ethical business practices.
The North Star Ethics pledge is actually a series of seven pledges, including a pledge to invest in building trust in relationships across the psychedelic field; a pledge to consider the implications of the choices that are made while understanding the potential consequences of unethical behavior to individuals, communities, and the psychedelic field at large; and a pledge to support the flourishing of the psychedelic field, giving back should a company’s work lead to personal gain.
This pledge came about after a dinner with twenty of the psychedelics “elders” who were asked questions about their hopes and fears for this moment in psychedelics, and what they’d like to see done.
At other information-seeking sessions, clinicians and researchers were asked for their perspectives on commercialization and what would support their work now. “Here a concern was raised of a ‘nuclear arms race’ effect, where unethical actors would have a competitive advantage to seize power, rapidly scale and control the narrative,” pledge creators stated.
It’s the scaling up of the psychedelics businesses that have really prompted business ethics concerns.
For example, Compass, a for-profit company doing research and psilocybin product development, is essentially competing with Usona Institute, a non-profit medical research therapeutics company. If Compass locks up patents for psilocybin drug development, which is what a for-profit company needs to do to secure its expensive research and development work, they could effectively make it more difficult for Usona—or any other non-profit psychedelics company—to conduct its own research and scale up its operations.
And Compass is putting more mojo behind its move. The company announced a bump in the firepower for its business development efforts with the addition of Chief Development Officer Trevor Mill, formerly with one of the first global biotechnology companies, Biogen (which had over $12 billion in revenue in 2017); and Chief Financial Officer Piers Morgan, who had worked previously as either CFO or CEO for multiple large European biotech companies and has a background as an investment banker specializing in mergers and acquisitions. Morgan has also led various IPOs on NASDAQ.
As it stands now, there is a perception that for-profits like Compass could be taking advantage of the research by non-profits, a clear business ethics problem. Compass opened its doors in 2015 as a non-profit, then switched to a for-profit two years later, causing some consternation among industry watchers about its true intentions.
In light of psychedelics, business development moves like that, Rick Doblin, founder and executive director of Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), urges caution—but understanding—as the industry continues to develop. “I think we’re in a terrific situation, and the easy criticism of ‘Oh capitalism is bad, for-profit companies are bad, and they are trying to do evil things with psychedelics to monopolize the market’- I don’t think that’s really happening,” he said in an interview published on MAPS website about “psychedelic capitalism.”
“I think we all have to give each other the benefit of the doubt and just watch what people do and watch what happens. So that would be my final statement on that: let’s be cautious and be concerned, but let’s watch what happens. It’s about the people and how things are done.”

2020.09.22 01:12 Sokuron Corrupt cop and greedy landlord

This happened nearly 2 years ago. My parents bought this land in the “middle” of the city. The center my dad called it. Well, my dad cuz we moved into this city (Sochi) from Berlin thought the geographical center of a city is the most progressed. Like in Berlin. While it’s not like that usually, it depends on the cities history. And this cities history ended up being the most progressed near the sea. And the “center” of the city was a ghetto. That’s how me and my family ended up living in a ghetto area, while being middleclass for European and American standards. Lets say above average per russian standards. We already bought the land so there was no go back. So my parents started to plan our house. On their own, my dad beforehand learned architectures and sketching, he practiced it 2 years beforehand (before the event aka from 2016 up to the events of this aka 2018) even just for this project. It was and still is very important to him to this day. He insisted on doing it how he wants without hiring anyone to do it for him. He commanded the workers aswell and helped them out with building etc aswell. While being bk then 57 years old. He is a veteran and for his age, very fit, healthy and strong. I admire my dad in that. But now to the actual story. One day my mom got a call from the police, the police saying a Mr. ep said they cut down a tree. My mom got confused and asked who mr ep even was, apparently he was the owner of a 5lv soviet house which was right infront of our property. It’s like a house were ig some 50-100 people lived in, in horrible conditions to that. Russian ghetto blocks don’t look like American ghetto blocks I promise you. The Russian once r still from Stalin’s time with no renovation or anything. Proper rundown cheap houses with many apartments basically. The landlord/owner accused my dad of doing this crime and he filed against my dad. Got a cop onto my dad over a tree and now, the best part of this is that they did go to court. The landlord got few old ladies to act as eye witnesses for him and didn’t have any more evidence than those “witnesses”, they stated a time and date in the court. But My dad at this time with all the workers weren’t on the property at all. They got lucky and this day our stuff from Berlin arrived on large trucks, so they were getting all trucks unloaded and put all furniture etc into our storage room. The whole day. So all of them had a waterproof alibi due to the fact there were camera recordings and they had filed documents on every worker who worked with them in general meaning they gave them to court confirming that all workers were present with my dad and who were seen in the recordings. The whole day, carrying furniture. My parents ofc won the lawsuit. But after they did the petty landlord got his cop friend and the cop didn’t stop nagging my parents about “u didn’t give them all papers in court did u? U could have ordered someone else from the outside to do it.” Etc etc And he didn’t stop nagging my parents. My parents ended up PAYING the cop AND the landlord so they will be happy and stop bothering my parents when they try to build their house. 2 years have past and the relationship with the 5lv house did not end in good terms and this wasn’t the last story out them, they caused us more trouble in the time passing. Which I will talk about in the next post.

2020.09.22 00:28 lunawonder08 Hello! I'm just wondering does the way you look effect how your family/family-friends view you in comparison to other siblings/relatives? Also how does it make you feel?

Hey there, I was just curious about something that I personally noticed with people I know who are of mixed Asian descent. (This covers people who are Eurasian, people of different Asian ethnic groups and Blasians) Feel free to answegive your inputs.
My ex-bf is Quapa (3/4 White and 1/4 Filipino) his dad is half-Filipino. Now, I am aware that Quarter Asians are only 1/4 Asians but they also vary in appearance with some I know looking more Asian/POC and some looking more White. My ex is white passing (you only really can tell he's Asian if you look close enough) and he has green eyes/brown hair. However, his brother is more Asian looking and is darkemore brown. In his house there was only photos of my ex and none of his brother, his parents would spoil him but his brother would be ignored. (It made me feel sad because his brother was only 12 while me and his older brother were dating) I've observed his relatives/family friends saying that they wish his younger brother looked more European like my ex. I wonder if any of you guys experience this? Do your own parents/relatives wish you would have look different?
My mother is mixed Filipino and she also experienced this. Her mom would constantly always try to pinch her nose while she was younger so that it can grow, it did grow (her nose is more prominent compared to Southeast Asians but lower than Europeans.. she has no issue with buying western glasses) but her younger brother had a very prominent bridge/sharp nose. Her mom would always wish that she got that nose. (The one her brother had) Also her mother would constantly curl her head, make her wear high heels (My mom is 5'6 but she was a late bloomer). Also idk but it seems Asian moms in general are obsessed with looks. However, my mom told me her family/parent would admire her eyes because they were big. My mother told me it made her feel bad, made her feel as if she wasn't good enough and that she didn't fill her mom's wishes.

Also: I don't understand why Asians are shocked if they have a half-white kids who looks Asian. I mean if they are going to have half Asian genes they are likely to express those genes in the way you look. Also its weird when Asians think having a child with a White person means having a light skin child, I've known plently of Hapas who are darker in colour. Genetics can express itself in many ways.
I mean no disrespect and if my question is out of line I will delete this post. Thanks you guys :)

2020.09.21 23:33 cokeloke Mentally Violated

As I was reading some of these stories I remember feeling a similar "off vibe" and tried to recall when are where I felt it. It then dawned on me that I have had a creepy encounter but never classified it as such because I feel like I was more traumatized by the experience than creeped out.
This took place in the Bay Area - which means "Silicon Valley" - where a lot of tech startups blossom. At the time, my boyfriend and I had closed down our startup and he was consulting another startup while we both looked for jobs. I would meet him at the Incubator (an open workspace for people and startups to come to where you rent space to work) around 6 pm to drive him back home with me.
That day I came a little earlier so that I could study consulting case studies for my interviews. At this incubator, there were two classrooms on the side for workshops or just additional space for work. I went into one of these spaces so I wouldn't be encouraged to talk to my boyfriend. This is the last my boyfriend saw me as he put his headphones into work.
Previously, my boyfriend had told me that there was a man that would dress up as a woman at his work. The man would come dressed in male clothes but get dressed in woman's clothes in the parking lot. This didn't phase me as it's the Bay Area and people tend to be more open and accepting (emphasis on tend to be - there is still a lot of conservative thought around here).
I was planning to do 1 hour of uninterrupted work but before I began I went to the kitchen to make some tea. An older man who had just finished running a workshop began to chat with me and I was trying to wrap up the conversation as I wanted to get back to studying and I also saw that the man who dressed as a woman (and was fully dressed as a woman with makeup at that moment) was close to the instructor and me so I assumed (I will use "he" as the pronoun) he wanted to ask the instructor a question. I looked down to walk away and I am stopped by the man (dressed as a woman).
I surprised by this and he tells me he needs to talk to me about something and it looks urgent. He asks me if we can go somewhere private so I suggest the hall which is still visible - at least to my boyfriend (who is not paying attention). He tells me that he needs advice from a woman (the Incubator was 99% male) so I found this to be reasonable. He told me that people aren't very accepting of him and right away I was sympathetic toward him. He had a very strong European accent to it was very hard to understand him and he was speaking low. He wanted advice so I was eager to help (a dumb weakness of mine). He told me how he hasn't been accepted here and people look at him strangely and he wanted advice on where he could find more open-minded people. I told him that although the Bay Area tries to come off open there is a lot of conservative thought around gender fluidity and that maybe he can explore the city. He told me it was disgusting and he didn't want to go there.
He then proceeds to tell me a story about how he would go to a gym and get dressed in the women's restroom and at first, it was fine but then someone reported him saying he was staring at women (this is what I gathered but it was hard to understand him). I felt sorry for him but I also told him that I really didn't have an answer and he kept rambling and it was still hard to understand somethings.
However, he wanted to ask me some more "girl" questions which is how he phrased it but wanted to go somewhere more private and he indicated toward the women's restroom which was past two double doors. I ignored a slight red flag of discomfort as I wanted to be supportive of this person and I really felt he had feminine questions. But at one point - he had mentioned how he was married and that his wife knew that he dressed this way which was fine but when we got into the bathroom the questions became more strange and it became less about questions and more about orgasms and my "raw beauty."
Since I didn't understand his accent much I didn't understand how one topic was linking to another but he told me that he had many girlfriends before but he wasn't a pedophile because the country from where he is from lets you date people below 18. He pulled out his phone and showed me a photo of him in a plan as the pilot and a girl beside him who he said was 14 years of age.
Then the next topic came up about orgasming without sexually touching but through yoga or meditation and how you can achieve an orgasm so well without even touching someone. He then began to say something that he loved my raw beauty and that he would love to feel what it would be like to be a woman.
Then he told me that earlier that night while he was in the restroom two women came out of the stall while he was at the mirror and something came out of him. He described something that seemed like it was an orgasm - but he was trying to tell me that his body was shifting into a woman and he doesn't know what came out. He pointed to it on the floor - a yellowish discharge. He then apologizes and grabs a paper towel to clean this up.
Before this, I was already sweating and I was trying to look "chill" so I didn't startle him. But I was becoming nauseous because there was an overwhelming sense of fear that began to take over me. He kept repeating things about my raw beauty and wanting to know what it would feel like .... (parts of me don't understand what he was getting at but red flags were everywhere). In these moments I am trying to understand what he is saying with his thick accent which is why it's taking me a bit longer to register what he is even talking about but I begin to think that things aren't clicking. For instance, he is apparently married to a woman, who knows that he crossdresses yet, he doesn't have anyone to answer all these questions about the female body or what it's like to become a woman.
Things began to blur and I think I was in the restroom for 5-6 minutes and I think he could see the color leaving my face and I think he tried to reassure me he wasn't a "creep" or maybe a "pedophile" although I'm 26 at this point. Thinking back - I'm not sure if he was trying to convince me to take my clothes off to experience my "raw beauty."
But something is off and so I calmly tell him everything is ok and that I need to check in on my boyfriend and he then tells me sure and that my boyfriend can come here if he likes. He then says he is going to continue to put on his makeup.
I calmly leave the restroom to not seem freaked out and I directly go to my boyfriend and tell him we need to get the fuck out of here. Coincidentally it was my boyfriend's last day working at that incubator so I never saw this man again.
But we didn't know if I should call the Incubator to let them know since nothing was done to me. I also thought that it could be that deep down I'm still very conservative about things still but as time has passed - I realize it was a strange experience and I had a friend in college who was transgender and he never made me feel this may.
I walked into this thinking I was helping someone and walked away feeling mentally violated somehow.
TLDR; Man who dresses as a woman approaches me about "feminine questions" but it turns into him talking about dating a 14-year-old girl, having an organism in the bathroom where he shows me the discharge, and him saying he wants to experience what it is like to have a female body.

2020.09.21 21:06 travel-notes-oliver Biarritz in summer

Biarritz in summer
The city of Biarritz is located on the Bay of Biscay, in the 64 department of France, called the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. It is located along the Basque coast at the Cape of St. Martin, closely adjacent to Anglet and Bayonne, and has been a health resort in France for more than one century – in the “beautiful era” it was a place of rest and treatment for the aristocracy, now – modern high-ranking officials. Thanks to “right” waves of the Atlantic ocean Biarritz is a renowned surfing center.

The history of prosperity and popularity of this area can be associated with the names of two outstanding women – Alienor of Aquitaine and Empress Eugenia. When Alienor married Henry Plantagenet, king of England in the 12th century, the English built the Fortress Farragus next to a fishing village. When this country was appreciated by Empress Eugenia, a popular resort for the aristocracy arose here. The traces of the English fortress have not survived to this day, but there are many sights associated with Eugenia. For example, the most emblematic building on the shore – Villa of Eugenia, originally built as the empress’s rest and reception house, is now called the Hotel du Palais (now under reconstruction), and is used to accommodate the wealthy public. The Church of Saint Eugenia also beautifies the Biarritz coastline and is a local sight.

The main local attraction, in a manner of speaking, is surfing. Particular waves arising due to the specific bottom configuration and the processes of the Atlantic Ocean that are difficult to understand, make it possible to relatively easily master mysteries of this sport. For a good wave, it’s necessary to know the time of high and low tide, and all local surfers have it timetable.
In practice, in order to surf “from scratch”, it takes a week of classes at a surf school. Our group mastered cherished skills just on the date indicated. Although, personally, this type of activity does not suit me, and with great enthusiasm I visited coastal cafes. I also photographed schoolchild surfers.
One of the emblematic sights is the local lighthouse, built in 1834 on Cape Saint-Martin. You can mount it to appreciate the stunning view of the Central Beach, as well as take a photo at the observation deck located at its foot. Hotel Le Regina is nearby, in the restaurant of which you can enjoy tasting dishes prepared by an eminent chef. It’s suitable for gourmets, of course. We were not lucky at all – at that moment there was no eminent chef, we had to suffer with the usual menu 🙂

We prepared for this our visit to Biarritz and booked a sightseeing tour with a private guide through a special resource – Excurzilla. We learned a lot of useful things (in just a couple of hours!), looked at all the most famous places in the city, and in general, had a great time. For example, we became0 familiar with the history of the emergence of the Russian Church, located (oh, miracle!) on Russian street of Biarritz. In general, I have to say that since the 19th century wealthy Russians have chosen this city and the region where the Russian Church is located, now a respectable place, studded with luxurious villas. The villa is still located here in which the great Russian composer Igor Stravinsky once lived. And now, according to stories of the guide, Russian residents occupy more than one villa in this region.
The history of the settlement, in the place of which modern Biarritz grew up, is closely connected with whaling. And to this day, a whale is depicted on the city’s coat of arms. Poor animals nearly disappeared from the face of the earth – I did not even think that until recently streets of European cities were illuminated by whale oil lamps. Horror! We can say that new technologies (gas and electricity) have saved poor animals from complete extermination. Old Port of Biarritz was exactly the place from where whale hunters set off on their shaky little boats to stun an unfortunate whale with an accurate blow and pull it on shore. Now we cannot say that such horrors were happening in this reputable place.

https://preview.redd.it/sq2z9g3hujo51.jpg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=144083f0a810071f981598796e2fbf8a6146e665
The oldest street in Biarritz – Gambetta has maintained its charm, showing restored old buildings. One of which is the old city market, where it’s possible to still buy fresh fruits, groceries and everything else, and in the evening public life flourishes around. A large number of cafes, restaurants and bars are concentrated around the old market – perhaps not something else, but the French love (and know how) to eat.
There is also an unremarkable clothing store called 64 on this street. Another tourist would not attach it any significance, but for the locals it’s a symbol of national identity to a certain degree, – this is the number of the department of France, in which Biarritz is located. In general, instead of souvenirs, you can buy some clothes with the symbol of this brand.

https://preview.redd.it/4kqe2pvhujo51.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8809ae1c574d9d0577ff3f1bd48f9ec05e201e6b
Gambetta street leads to the former town hall square, where now the reorientated town hall building is not at once recognizable, a bank, shops and other organizations are located here. We can say that it’s the very center of the old city. However, one historical place still remains on it – it’s the Miremont cafe. Even now, there you can taste unusually delicious desserts, custard (a rarity in Europe) tea and a huge number of variations of coffee service. Both with stunning views, local desserts in surroundings of the historic interior of this cafe will help you get your impression of why Biarritz was so loved by hedonists of the past.

https://preview.redd.it/grv2vlmiujo51.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=90653d501bf4ed0db25006b6705c62cb9450e00e
In addition to the aforementioned Hotel du Palais (one of the best hotels in Biarritz), a casino building is also on the Central Beach, which also houses a public swimming pool (not without reason the city has a history of a balneotherapeutic health resort), as well as cafes, restaurants and shops. Since it’s quite difficult to swim in these places (Atlantic Ocean, even so!) and often cold, beaches here are more convenient for promenade. In general, the guide told a quite large number of stories about ships that could not cope with peculiarities of the Bay of Biscay, the most difficult in the way of navigation, and sunk in the local waters even in recent history.

https://preview.redd.it/0kektt9jujo51.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cdb660af6e1d5d8e330ee2bb637013271e5a5283
By the way, this is why Biarritz does not have a yacht berth and corresponding infrastructure – during the storm season, waves gain enormous sizes. For centuries, local authorities have tried to protect the city bays with the help of breakwaters, but it did not work out to build properly – the ocean breaks all attempts to establish artificial restrictions for it.
For example, a representative story is associated with one of the sights of Biarritz – cliff of the Holy Virgin. In the 19th century, a natural rock at this place was yet broken by order of Napoleon III to arrange a port-refuge, however, it was not possible to install full-fledged breakwaters. All in all, a statue of the Holy Virgin was installed here, making this a tourist place, by building a bridge by the Eiffel atelier to the rock from the shore, starting from the Museum of the Sea.

2020.09.21 20:18 ammodotcom Early American Militias: The Forgotten History of Freedmen Militias from 1776 until the Civil War

https://preview.redd.it/zwpt4r0yljo51.jpg?width=400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9e3f2441641ecd57659dc4b6f748fb2d622657c1
The United States militia is enshrined in the Second Amendment of the Constitution. And while the militia movement of today is widely known, its history – and the history of independent Constitutional militias stretching back to the dawn of the republic – is far less well known.
Why does this matter nowadays? Because understanding the historical roots of America's militias helps modern-day members appreciate the role they play in our federal system of government. Because since inception, militias have been tasked with stopping those who hold public office from exceeding their authority or those seeking to enact legislation outside of their operating charter – a crucial check against incremental encroachment by the state, as James Madison wrote in the Federalist Papers on January 29, 1788:
"Besides the advantage of being armed, which the Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation, the existence of subordinate governments, to which the people are attached, and by which the militia officers are appointed, forms a barrier against the enterprises of ambition, more insurmountable than any which a simple government of any form can admit of."
The militia is the final means of recourse in this cycle of self-government – and arguably the most important. Thus this is the first in a two-part historical series on America's militias. The second part, American Militias after the Civil War: From Black Codes to the Black Panthers and Beyond, looks at additional changes this American institution underwent from Reconstruction onwards.
The Colonial Origins of the United States Militia
The vision of an American militia goes back even before the United States Constitution or the founding of the United States. In most states in colonial America, all able-bodied men were considered to be part of the militia – through which the individual towns and cities would provide for the common defense.
A militia is explicitly mentioned in the United States Constitution, prior to the Bill of Rights. Article I, Section 8, drafted around the same time as the founding of the Springfield Armory (ground zero for American ammunition manufacturing), mentions it three times alone:
• To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions;
• To provide for organizing, arming, and disciplining, the Militia, and for governing such Part of them as may be employed in the Service of the United States, reserving to the States respectively, the Appointment of the Officers, and the Authority of training the Militia according to the discipline prescribed by Congress;
• Article II, Section 2 designates the President of the United States as the “Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States.”
While the 1903 Militia Act is a relatively recent innovation to the world of the American militia, it is worth referencing, even if briefly, as we dive into our long history. The Militia Act of 1903 separates the militia into two groups:
• Organized Militia: These are the forces that comprise the National Guard, which are the organized militia forces of each state. It is not synonymous with the National Guard of the United States, which is a reserve military force under joint control of the federal and state governments.
• Unorganized Militia: This is virtually every other man in the United States. Men are not part of the unorganized militia if they are part of the organized militia. All other able-bodied men between the ages of 17 and 45 are considered part of the militia. This is an important concept to remember, even as we work through the part of militia history predating this Act.
In the pre-1903 Militia Act era, the line between the two is not so clearly defined. Many of the militias discussed below are organized and subject to statute, but not “organized” in the sense that they have official membership rolls, uniforms, or even significant involvement from their respective state and territorial governments. Much like the later independent or “Constitutional militia” movement, there is a rank, structure and a chain of command, but the organization is not necessarily subject to government oversight – other than having to comply with all relevant statutes. In the case of the militias of the Revolutionary War period, this is very fuzzy.
The militia is an outgrowth of an English common law institution. The word itself dates back to 1590. Originally, the word simply meant soldiers in the service of the state. By the mid-17th Century, however, it had taken on connotations of a civilian military force. It carried additional connotations in terms of a military raised in temporary service to respond to some kind of an emergency.
The early militias, on both sides of the Atlantic, served the purpose of both security and defense. These were particularly important in the New World, where attacks from hostile Indian tribes were a constant threat. Indeed, these militias played a key role in the French and Indian Wars, including the primary one taking place concurrently with the Seven Years War between the years 1754 and 1763.
During these periods, militias organized by towns were also the pool from which the Provincial Forces were drafted. This was, in fact, a rare occurrence. The Provincial Forces were one of the best-paying wage labor opportunities available to American colonists, so their ranks were rarely short.
While the Provincial Forces were very professional and disciplined, the militias were not. Indeed, no less an authority than George Washington (at that time the adjutant-general of the Virginia militia) noted that the militia was largely disorganized. He considered the militia fit for times of peace, but ill-equipped for times of war. Even during peace, the bulk of the colonial military were what are today Army Rangers – well paid, professional, highly disciplined, and accomplished.
Militias During the American Revolution
The militias, however, played a central role in the American Revolution. The famous “Minutemen” – figures as iconic as the cowboy in American mythology – are, in fact, personifications and embodiments of the militia as it existed during the time of the American Revolution.
The history of the American militia cannot be discussed without talking about the Minutemen. These were effectively partisans in the war against the British, for which there is a subtle irony: The Minutemen harked back to the earliest traditions of the English countryside militia – ready on a moment’s notice.
Indeed, the militia is perhaps the British institution that most shaped the United States and its culture.
The British did not represent the entire militia, but the most disciplined and committed elements of it. They were, as the name implies, ready to go at a minute’s notice. They represented approximately a quarter of the entire force, and skewed toward the younger and more radical members of the revolutionary movement.
The roots of the Minutemen (and of the militia in general) lie in the old British colonial militia. In the Massachusetts Bay Colony, all able-bodied men between the ages of 16 and 60 were obligated to serve in the militia. By 1645, possibly earlier, there were men selected specially for rapid deployment segments of the militia, known as “training bands.” The term “Minutemen” was even used during this period. These were organized on a town-by-town basis, with some towns, notably Lexington, not having special rapid response units.
During this period, Minutemen could not be over 30 years old. Officers were elected by rank and file, as was generally common throughout the colonial militias. Fowling pieces were the most common weapon. Uniforms were nonexistent, with hunting gear being the most common form of clothing. The French and Indian War provided the irregular forces with training in proto-guerilla warfare that European troops were not familiar with.
On the eve of the Revolutionary War, the Minutemen became something distinct from the rest of the militia, not simply its most committed segment. The Powder Alarm of 1774 underscored the need for a sleeker, more committed and more rapidly responding segment of the militia – the regular militia simply did not deploy quickly enough to prevent the British military from seizing materiel from the local ammunition stores and armories.
The British feared the power of the militias and the Minutemen prior to the Revolution. One of the strategic aims of the Intolerable Acts was to significantly decrease the power of town government. When General Thomas Gage, Governor of Massachusetts under the Intolerable Acts, attempted to seat his hand-picked court in Worcester, 2,000 militiamen prevented him from doing so. In response, Gage set out to confiscate provincial munitions. The militia responded in kind by assembling 4,000 men to the Cambridge common.
From the very beginning of the revolution, the militias played a pivotal role, despite the fact that they were of limited utility. The Battles of Lexington and Concord started as a confrontation between the local militias and the colonial authorities. On April 19, 1775, 800 British troops marched out of Boston to Concord. They were unable to locate their target, the colonists’ arms and ammunition, which they were to confiscate. It was at 5 a.m. that they encountered 70 militiamen in Concord. They ordered the militiamen to disperse, but the militiamen refused. This is what led to “the shot heard round the world,” but to this day historians are unsure who fired first.
While the militias themselves were primarily used for disrupting supply lines and harrassing, skirmishing type attacks, many of the senior officers were those who had cut their teeth bush fighting during the French and Indian Wars. On the other hand, the British senior officers had no experience with this kind of fighting and had to learn it on the fly.
On their way back to the city after being unable to find the arms and ammunition, the British were stalked and sniped by militiamen. The company was routed, and 900 additional troops were required to save them from the clandestine attacks of the Patriot militias.
Throughout the Revolutionary War, the Minutemen model increasingly became the standard for irregular militia fighters. This provided the Continental Army with swelled numbers on short notice. While the Minutemen weren’t known as great marksmen, the psychological impact and distraction of their presence certainly helped win the Patriots’ cause. Scores of militias were culled from each of the newly independent 13 states, as well as Vermont, which was at that time its own independent republic and not one of the United States.
While the revolutionary fervor was felt most strongly in the militias at the beginning of the war, this waned over time. After all, the Revolutionary War lasted eight years – a long time to maintain that level of enthusiasm. The militias elected their own officers and often used this to ensure that they would not have to serve outside of their home state. Often times, militia members hired replacements, and in extreme cases, exorbitant bribes were required to get the men to perform their militia duties. The currency became inflated over the course of the war, requiring land grants and promises of slaves at the war’s end.
The militia was a hugely popular public institution at the end of the Revolutionary War. It was seen as the national defense of a free people, as opposed to a standing army. Most experts, however, did not feel that the militia had much in the way of actual military value in the event of a foreign invasion. Still, figures like George Washington were forced to support the militia publicly, while speaking of its limitations more privately.

2020.09.21 19:53 Full6uard Beendigungsmeldung arbeitslosigkeit ohne leistungsbezug - help understanding

Hello everyone,
a friend of mine today received a letter, stating what the title says. More detail follows: nach den Vorschriften der gesetzlichen Rentenversicherung kann eine betragsfreie Zeit unter bestimmten Voraussetzungen als Anrechnungszeit berücksichtgt werden. Folgende Zeit im Meldezeitraum 2020 wurde Ihrem Rentenversicherungsträger gemeldet: (some dates follow as Begin and Ende, from january of 2020 to september). This is all basically, so because both my german and my friends german are bad, and internet only provides info in german about this, i thought of asking here if someone knows what this letter means for my friend/ is it something to worry about (we plan to ask the amt about it as well, but as i said everything is in german so maybe here we can get some more clearance).
Some background info: my friend is an european citizen who lives in germany, and is currently 3 years unemployed (all 3 years living in germany), actively looking for a job while receiving guidance from the Arbeitsagentur. Other than that she receives no benefits at all (not elligible), nor has she received in the past any.
Thanks in advance !

2020.09.21 18:09 fulano7 Most of indie/arthouse films suck for reasons that have nothing to do with budget

Some time ago I tried to get into indie movies. Mostly European, Latin, Iranian hipster films... I gave them a try and took advice from indie movies fanbase. It's a matter of personal taste and I don't criticize people that prefer those movies to the more commercial Hollywood production.
And here goes the unconvenient truth: most of those movies objectively suck. I don't think that kind of movie lacks budget, quite the contrary: I feel like a waste of budget. I'm not talking about a different, introspective, non-commercial approach to filmmaking. I'm talking about plain bad storytelling. Nowadays, every time I begin watching a typical indie arthouse film, I start to pick gross pacing/narrative/characterization flaws and cliches of the media. My typical viewing sessions go like this:
- "This scene is running for too long, we already got the point - no need to expose this for 5 minutes"
- "What is the point of this drama? This conflict wasn't well developed in the plot, we are unable to feel engaged. I don't care for these characters."
- "Another gratutious nudity/sex scene"
- "Another gratutious drug abuse + deppression scene, I don't care"
I started to realize that many countries like India, South Korea, Nigeria, have their own domestic commercial movie industry. And in those domestic commercial movies, at least, the pacing isn't abysmal, the storytelling flaws are much less proeminent and - most importantly - the plots are minimally relatable and intelligible.
Arthouse films have a surrounding snobbish culture, a belief that in order to be artistically superior, one moviemaker has to be unclear in his narrative. "A movie doesn't even need a plot", the fanbase says. So the film feels more like a technical academic exercise. In a desperate move of "non-commercial self-assurance", they end up being plain bad storytellers, ignoring basic good narrative practices that date back to Ancient Greece.

2020.09.21 18:00 EmpireOfChairs Capstone for Part 3: Gravity's Rainbow

Hello, everybody! It’s finally time to leave the Zone!
Can you believe that you haven’t even gotten to the most difficult part of the novel yet?
Anyway, I’ve included a massive plot summary here, because the last capstone had one, but this is only for the benefit of new and future readers who are struggling to make sense of the plot threads, and it doesn’t contain any real analysis. If you feel like you understood the gist of what happened already, then feel free to skip it. I am hoping that this summary will elucidate this part of the novel for those who are having trouble following the narrative but still want the opportunity to come to their own conclusions about what it all means.
Throughout In the Zone, I found my real life suddenly full of random obstacles that meant that I couldn’t contribute to as many threads as I would have liked. I would read those other threads and find that things which had fascinated me were either being ignored wholesale or else (I felt) misinterpreted in the comments. As such, I would like to give my thoughts on them here and now, before we leave the Zone and the opportunity to discuss these things is lost.
However, because the plot of In the Zone is so damn long, I’ve decided to do things a little bit differently: I’m going to use this main thread for the summary, and then I’m going to write individual comments on the various parts of In the Zone which I think deserve more analysis before we move on to The Counterforce. The parts I will be analysing will be titled Bianca, Enzian, and The Castle, with associated page numbers based around the 902-page Vintage edition.
Plot Summary:
As you would imagine, I can’t put a lot of detail into a brief summary of what would, on its own, still represent a fairly long novel. I’d like to apologise in advance if I happen to miss anything important, story-wise.
In the Zone opens with Slothrop in his new secret identity as British journalist Ian Scuffling, travelling by train trough the remnants of post-war Germany, the Zone, where he shall remain for most of the book. He meets a racist, jingoistic military man named Major Duane Marvy, who is promptly thrown off the train by a mysterious African ‘rocket-trooper’ named Orbst Enzian. Wandering through the Zone, Slothrop encounters Geli Tripping, a witch with an owl who reveals herself to be the lover of a murderous Soviet cyborg named Tchitcherine, who is involved with finding the Schwarzgerät; a one-of-a-kind V-2 rocket. Having apparently escaped Them, finding out what happened to this rocket then becomes the primary goal of Slothrop – his new epic quest.
Slothrop attempts to infiltrate the Mittelwerke, a vast SS-shaped underground tunnel complex, used by the Nazis to create V-2 rockets using slave-labourers from the nearby Dora concentration camp. He finds the place invaded by Marvy’s army, and the Russians – who both decide to murder Slothrop for discovering what seems to be… an ongoing operation? After his escape, Slothrop finds himself escaping to Berlin via hot-air balloon, only to be hunted by Marvy’s boys once more, but luckily the balloon is filled with custard pies, which are then thrown into the engine of Marvy’s aircraft, presumably killing most of them.
We come to learn more about Enzian, who turns out to have lived previously as a sex-slave to Weissman, a high-ranking German officer who participated in the Herero genocide that wiped out Enzian’s family. As time progressed, Enzian became Weissman’s Monster – the sinister, black right-hand man during his master’s involvement with the development of the V-2 rocket and the mysterious Schwarzgerät. In the Zone, with Weissman’s disappearance, Enzian has taken on a new, commanding role as the leader of the Schwarzkommando – a paramilitary death-cult made up of members of the Erdschweinhöhle (the death-obsessed Herero-survivors scattered throughout various communities in Nordhausen), who have made it their goal to find the Schwarzgerät. He even gets his own right-hand man in the form of the radio-enthusiast Andreas Orukambe. Among the Schwarzkommando, however, there is disagreement – some, like Enzian, believe in the destiny of destruction promised by the Rocket, whilst others, such as Ombindi of the Empty Ones, wish to initiate their own form of ‘racial suicide’, which uses sexual deviancy to ensure a negative birth-rate, which is seen as a triumph of material pleasure over the European ideals of Christian asceticism and death-worship.
Because of his quest to discover the Schwarzgerät, he is by default the arch-nemesis of Tchitcherine. Tchitcherine, we find out, is the long-lost half-brother of Enzian, their father having had a steamy affair with a Herero girl whilst in the midst of deserting the Russo-Japanese War. He grows up into a high-ranking agent of the Leninist Soviet regime, being principally tasked with giving the native people of Kyrgyzstan a new language (the New Turkic Alphabet), which isn’t historically accurate, by the way. During an uprising against conscription in 1916, thousands of native Kazakhs were killed, in an event which Tchitcherine refers to as the Kirghiz Light, which loses him his cosy, bureaucratic job. He is haunted by this light, which he sees as an illumination, a transcendent moment in which he saw the force behind it all. Sent out to the Zone, Tchitcherine has quickly adopted the new role of Rocket-fanatic, believing (like Enzian) that there is a spiritual force to be revealed to him in the Schwarzgerät. He is not entirely sure why his superiors sent him to the Zone, but he is absolutely convinced that it somehow involves Enzian and the Schwarzkommando.
Back to Slothrop, who briefly runs into Enzian again, only to be told, rather ominously, that reality is not real. Enzian, indeed, seems to treat his existence as though they were all conjured into being by some director or writer-God, and that all they can do is follow a pre-determined path to His ending. Weird. Anyway, Slothrop then meets Säure Bummer, the coolest man in the Zone – a proto-hippie drug dealer and money-counterfeiter, who suggests that Slothrop take on the superhero identity of Rocketman (which he does) and then advises him to travel to a bar to meet a contact (Seaman Bodine, the foul-mouthed sailor) who will show Slothrop the way to the Schwarzgerät in exchange for picking up a massive shipment of marijuana – located in the centre of the Potsdam conference. He is then to return with the product, which will be given to an influential Zone personality called der Springer, who will know Slothrop is cool because Säure has given him a chess-piece (a white knight) with which to identify himself. With this potential reward, along with part of the score and one million fake marks, Slothrop decides to haul ass to the conference. He invents another disguise (Max Schelpzig, the name on the fake ID which brought him to Europe in the first place) and sets forth, first by taking a boat into the Russian sector and then running on foot through an Autobahn, jumping the barricade into Potsdam. He gets the dope eventually, after a few awkward encounters with politicians and a few epic stealth moves, and then returns to his boat, where he is then drugged and dragged away, unconscious. Turns out, Tchitcherine has been watching him the whole time, and has just drugged him with the truth-serum/LSD stand-in Sodium Amytal.). He then tries out a huge chunk of Slothrop’s product with his right-hand man, Dzaqyp Qulan, and dumps Slothrop in an abandoned film studio. Waking up, Slothrop encounters Greta Erdmann, a pre-war pornographic actress, who is searching the studio in the hopes of finding her daughter, Bianca, who was conceived at this very studio, with a man named Max Schelpzig, during the filming of German director der Springer’s movie Alpdrücken. Slothrop confides that he isn’t so sure that he’s not in a movie right now.
Meanwhile, the Argentinian anarchists of Squalidozzi find themselves in a submarine, longing for the Zone to become a permanently decentralised monument to the freedom of the individual, in stark contrast from what is happening back home, in their native Buenos Aires. They believe in the power of art to inspire revolution, and desire to work with der Springer to create a film version of Martin Fierro which will force their revolution into existence – just as his propaganda films seemed to will the Schwarzkommando into existence.
Quite the opposite kind of person is then introduced to us: Franz Pökler, a Nazi engineer who worked on the V-2 rocket and the Schwarzgerät under the command of Weissman (now calling himself Captain Blicero). Pynchon shows us basically all of Pökler’s adult life, in a non-linear order. What happens, in short, is this: Pökler is inspired to become a rocket-engineer after taking university lectures in chemistry via Laszlo Jamf, the Pavlovian who somehow conditioned Slothrop as a baby to get erections during V-2 rocket strikes, decades before the V-2 was invented. He marries Leni Pökler, a communist reactionary who will drift apart from him as Weimar Germany becomes the hotseat for a new form of Evil. After watching the late-night premiere of Alpdrücken, Pökler runs home and impregnates Leni with their only child, Ilse. Raising her, he feels compelled to instil within her a desire to travel to the Moon, which is handily reinforced with frequent visits to Zwölfkinder, an amusement park run entirely by children. With Leni gone, Pökler falls deep into his work for the Nazis. As time goes on, he begins to question the nature of his work – is what he is doing just as Evil as what They are doing? Blicero and the other higher-ups catch wind of this, and, to prevent sabotage, Ilse is removed from Pökler’s life. He realises that bringing up the topic will result in termination, possibly of his life, and so he keeps on with the rocket work. He then sees Ilse again, delivered to him at his office without a note, and is advised to go to Zwölfkinder with her, which he does. She disappears the next day. This happens year after year on the same day, with Pökler gradually developing a harrowing fear that she died in the first year, and was replaced by a similar-looking girl. On their final visit to Zwölfkinder, after the Nazi defeat, they find the park empty, and ‘Ilse’ no longer likes the Moon. She tells him that they will no meet again. He returns to the office to find that it has been bombed to smithereens – interesting, isn’t it, how this just so happened to occur on the same day that Pökler goes on his holiday? Bewildered, Pökler travels to the location that Ilse and Leni were supposedly being held, only to find himself in the middle of the Dora concentration camp.
We then encounter the quick story of Horst Achtfaden, another Nazi engineer who, whilst on-board a possibly imaginary “Toiletship” vessel, is captured by Enzian and the Schwarzkommando, who demand that he reveal to them the location of the Schwarzgerät. Deciding that the entire War was just a big joke and that it definitely isn’t worth dying for, he claims that he has no idea what they are talking about, but that there was a colleague named Narrisch who worked directly on the project, so maybe bother him instead.
Back to Slothrop, who is now following the slightly unhinged Greta Erdmann’s lead as she follows a hunch that she hopes will lead straight to Bianca. This leads to a coastal town near the Lüneberg Heath, where the glimpse of a shrouded figure in the mist sends Greta into hysterics before it disappears. As evening approaches, a party-boat named the Anubis drifts by the coast. Upon seeing it, Greta becomes convinced that Bianca is on-board, and jumps into the water after it. Slothrop swims after her, losing his entire Rocketman costume to the sea as he does so. He discovers that the ship is a massive upper-class, elite society orgy vessel - people are indulging in the most depraved sexual acts he has ever seen, all the time, all over the place. And as the night wades on, the centrepiece of this orgy commences – a young girl (Bianca) performs half of a Shirley Temple routine before being publicly humiliated and whipped by Erdmann, her mother. The following morning, Bianca enters Slothrop’s room and the two have sex. Later, a Japanese people-watcher named Ensign Morituri, who lived on the same coastal town that Slothrop was at when they saw the Anubis, relates the horrible truth of Erdmann’s past life. In the lead-up to her time with Slothrop, Erdmann, a fellow native of the town, had gradually gone insane with her partner Gerhardt von Goll, believing herself (for some reason) to be part-Jewish. As some sort of psychotic payback against the Nazis, she began dressing in a shroud and luring the local children out to the swamps, where she would role-play with them (her as Nazi, child as Jew) before drowning them. The figure Erdmann saw earlier is revealed to be a grown-up version of one of the few survivors of her serial-killings – a survivor only because Morituri was there to stop her.
Later, Slothrop endeavours to find Erdmann after she locks herself in her room out of guilt. However, she reveals that her guilt is out of a completely unrelated event – during her time at the Heath, she became the sexual associate of Captain Blicero, who is revealed to have gone insane whilst pursuing some kind of apocalyptic project with a sex-slave (a young boy named Gottfried, who has mysteriously disappeared…) and has now come to see himself as a mythic figure in a fantasy world, running through a different version of Germany from everyone else. During her career as a sex-icon, Blicero took Greta to a remote room in a petrochemical plant, filled with politicians and business tycoons, who introduced her to clothing made entirely out of a new form of plastic – she finds it so stimulating that she wanted to immediate get down and dirty with those around her, but was just as quickly led out of the room again, and, over time, left with a growing concern that she witnessed the birth of something too horrible to really get to the bottom of.
Shortly after this encounter, a major storm hits the Anubis, and many of the passengers, including Slothrop, find themselves thrown head-first into the Sea. Slothrop seems content that the ‘Fascist cargo’ of the ship will soon drown to death. Of course, he is not included – he is soon picked up by an illegal smuggler and sweet old lady called Frau Gnahb, who travels with her young descendant Otto. Reaching land the following morning, Slothrop quickly finds a white-suited man calling himself der Springer, who (after Slothrop shows him Säure’s chess-piece) reveals himself to be none other than Gerhardt von Goll. He is travelling with his friend, an ex-scientist named Narrisch. They all then hop on-board to journey to Peenemunde, where von Goll is immediately arrested by Russian authorities. Narrisch, angered by the whole thing, then forces Slothrop to accompany him as they do another deep-cover infiltration, this time of the Tchitcherine’s military base where they are keeping von Goll. Freeing von Goll, who is on Sodium Amytal, Slothrop finds himself kocking a guard unconscious and taking his uniform. Then, Slothrop and Narrisch run into Tchitcherine and Qulan, where they all get very confused about the uniforms, thus buying enough time for von Goll’s escape. Narrisch then decides to stay behind to fight off the Russians, to allow Frau Gnahb and the gang to get away safely.
Then, to Slothrop’s horror, they once more find the Anubis, where Slothrop is told that he will find his stash to give to von Goll in the engine room. Going on-board, he finds that no-one on the ship remembers or recognises him at all. He gets to the engine room, where the lights go out completely, and voices proceed to taunt and beat him. Frightened, he looks up to find the corpse of Bianca hanging from a noose, just above the stash. He gets it and runs, finding invisible hands grabbing his own as he tries to climb the ladder out of there.
Meanwhile, two older characters, Katje and Pirate, find themselves entwined with a counter-revolutionary force after the destruction of the White Visitation. Katje discovers a film by Osbie Feel which seems to reveal to her the whole Plan and how to combat it, whilst Pirate, on the other hand, has a psychic vision in which he discovers that people of those whom he had trusted are actually parts of Them, and, what’s worse, They know that he is watching them. Both Katje and Pirate begin to form a vague hope of something that can defeat Them, some kind of Counterforce…
Wandering homeless around the Zone again, Slothrop begins to wonder about his own family history, and the environmental damage wrought by his family’s paper company. Furthermore, he thinks back to his first American ancestor, William Slothrop, a pig-loving anti-establishment figure whose political pamphlet was burned on-masse by the Elite, and was then forced to return, defeated, to England. Slothrop once more meets both Marvy and the Schwarzkommando, neither of whom recognise him in the Russian uniform. We soon find out that Marvy is now in league with the Soviets, who have been extracting information about the Schwarzgerät from Narrisch and selling it back to Marvy. While this is going on, Slothrop finds Cuxhaven, where the local children ask him to become their mythical pig-hero, Plechazunga, as part of a pagan festival. Crashed by the cops, Slothrop takes refuge with a teenage girl, who wishes to escape with him, but refuses to leave when the time comes. Slothrop, on the road again, finds a slightly mad German child who demands that Slothrop help him find his lemming, which they fail to do, but Slothrop himself finds a pig, who accompanies him on his journey, which is interrupted by one evening in which Slothrop finds a fellow homeless wanderer named Franz Pökler, who he finds strangely relatable.
Meanwhile, we get to hear about Lyle Bland. Bland was a member of the Masons, though he did not care about the society in the same way that the other Masons seemed to. However, as time went on, he felt that he understood their rites and rituals in a way that the real members never did. He became connected to arcane magickal forces, creating nightly out-of-body experiences, saying on his deathbed that he would choose that night to break through to the Other Side and achieve transcendence. Bland’s life prior to this event was a mish-mash of government deals with mobsters, with the conniving blackmail techniques of intelligence agencies, with the grand conspiracies of international technology tycoons. This last one seems particularly interesting, don’t you think? Bland thinks so too, and he actually has quite a pet passion for a remarkable scheme involving pinball machines that are built to fail – the machines will, in fact, fail immediately after they are fixed. How? Good question.
The final Slothrop scene of In the Zone shows him once more with Bodine, running away from American troops and straight into a mansion which happens to be hosting the party of the century. Ditching his pig-costume in a closet, he takes up in a bedroom with a prostitute named Solange, who is actually Leni Pökler in a new identity. Meanwhile, Bodine runs into Major Marvy, who is here to have sex with a minority so that he can live out a racist power-fantasy. Bodine gives Marvy a vial of cocaine, which Marvy then stashes into his jacket. Later, the mansion is raided by American troops – Marvy, having sex with a minority, freaks it because of the coke he left in his pocket, runs to the closet to find the jacket, only to discover that his whole uniform is missing – the only outfit he can put on to escape is some sort of pig costume. The American troops then find him, ask him if he is Tyrone Slothrop, which Marvy agrees to, hoping that Slothrop hasn’t done anything too bad. He is then kidnapped and dragged into the woods by Muffage and Spontoon, the two hitmen hired by Pointsmen in a previous part of the book to find Slothrop, who proceed to drug and castrate Marvy.
The final section features Mossmoon and Scammony, two government boys back in England who gossip about Pointsman’s career ruination over the castration of Marvy, and the collapse of the whole Scheme. They uneasily discuss the role of homosexuality in government conspiracies. They reveal, finally, what Slothrop was supposed to do in Their Grand Scheme. He was supposed to begin the extermination of the black race. Oh well, they think. If he can’t do it, They will just have to develop different methods.
In the Zone ends on, or around, August 6th 1945 – the date of the atomic bomb strike on Hiroshima. It is also the celebration the Transfiguration.
Discussion Questions:
· Has it occurred to you that most of the dialogue in these sections would have been spoken in German?
· Why do you think the novel is divided into four parts, and what do you think separates them?
· What do you make of the use of the Wizard of Oz quote that begins this section? Quite interesting, especially considering that this is the only epigram that seems to have no reference point in the actual novel.
· What has changed between the beginning and the end of In the Zone?
· Many have expressed the view that Gravity’s Rainbow is not about WWII at all. In fact, Gravity’s Rainbow is about Vietnam. How do you feel about that interpretation, given the focus on the Zone here? More importantly, what does In the Zone tell us about the world in 1973?
· Do you believe that Gravity’s Rainbow is at all autobiographical?
· Why do you think Slothrop keeps becoming a superhero in these sections? What do superheroes and comic books mean to Pynchon?
· Some people have pointed out, with a particular focus on the episodes in which Slothrop wakes up in the studio and Katje finds Osbie Feel’s movie, that the plot is actually a giant film. How does that strike you, and how do you think that metafiction and the introduction of alternative mediums relates to the themes of In the Zone?
· In the Zone makes up literally half of the book. But why? What’s so important about it that could not expressed elsewhere?
· For that matter, what do you make of the Zone itself? Why do you think he wrote a book around it?
· Does Pynchon evoke the imagery of ghosts, magic, angels, demons, telepathy and other phenomena with genuine sincerity, or are we supposed to take these as metaphors for more grounded events?
· This section is far more epic in scope than the two preceding it. Did you encounter anything cool or interesting that you think we forgot about in the discussion threads?
· What do you make of the Rocket-cartel, and what do think Their grand plan actually is?
· What was your favourite episode of this part? Also, what was your favourite Pynchon-tangent or speech?

2020.09.21 17:43 icecoolsushobhan [r/IndiaSpeaks - Biweekly Geopolitics Thread] Abraham Accords signed, TikTok escapes US ban, and the CIA's Tibet Program

Welcome to this week's edition of the Biweekly Geopolitics Thread, where we discuss all the news from around the world. Discussion does not have to be related to India, and users are encouraged to share and discuss stories in the comments. Here are a few stories to get the discussion rolling:

Top 5 stories

  1. COVID-19 cases surge in Europe
European countries, once presented as benchmarks for effective use of lockdowns to tackle the coronavirus pandemic, are experiencing a resurgence, fueled by movement of people across countries. On Sunday, France reported over 10,000 new cases while the UK reported 4,000. The WHO warned that a very serious situation was emerging in Europe, which is compounded by the fact that the previous lockdown had such a massive economic impact that doing it again could be difficult politically, with protests already erupting in Madrid. Nonetheless, new restrictions on travel and daily life are expected.
  1. PLA Air Force simulates attack on US base
The Communist Party of China's armed air wing - the PLA Air Force - released a video of simulated war games in which nuclear-capable fighter jets were shown to be attacking a model of the U.S.'s Andersen Air Force Base in Guam. At the same time, the PLAAF sent fighter jets close to Taiwan, beyond the half-way point in the Taiwan Straits, causing Taiwan to deploy an air defense missile system and scramble its own jets. This points to increased tension in the East China Sea, where the US has been conducting naval operations with two of its aircraft carriers.
  1. Abraham Accords signed between Israel and UAE, Bahrain
In a glitzy ceremony at the White House, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu (who is also the country's foreign minister) joined the foreign ministers of UAE and Bahrain to sign the historic peace deal - called the Abraham Accords - that would establish diplomatic ties between the countries for the first time, doubling the number of Arab countries with official ties to Israel. Marking that historic move, Saudi Arabia allowed an Israeli El Al flight to use its air space en route to Abu Dhabi. Previously, only Air India was allowed to fly over Saudi Arabia in flights to and from Israel. The presence of Bahrain - largely seen as a satellite state of Saudi Arabia - strongly implies that the latter is on board with the deal as well. Speculation is rife that Morocco and Sudan are also looking to recognize Israel.
  1. TikTok and WeChat survive US ban, for now
On Sunday, the US was all set to ban new downloads of popular Chinese apps TikTok and WeChat, over concerns that the apps were used for surveillance by the Chinese Communist Party. However, both survived the ban. TikTok's US operations will be owned partly by Walmart and Oracle in a deal that has the blessings of the White House, while a federal judge stayed a ban on WeChat. Oracle will host all of TikTok's US data locally. The WeChat issue is more complicated, as it is the only means of communication between American citizens of Chinese origin and their families back home in China, where virtually every other app is banned.
  1. Rare sarcophagi found in Egypt
In a happy moment for human history, archaeologists in Egypt announced the discovery of a tomb with 27 sarcophagi dating back to about 2,500 years. Experts at the site, who had to climb down an 11 m deep well in difficult conditions (no heavy equipment is allowed at the site to avoid damaging it), say that the tomb seems to have been unopened since the sarcophagi were first buried. The tomb was uncovered in the town of Saqqara, south of the capital Cairo, which was an active burial ground in one of the ancient world's great civilizations.

Geopolitical History: The CIA in Tibet

With tensions between India and China at the border reaching historic levels, there has been renewed discussion about Tibet. For over a thousand years, the plateau, often called the "roof of the world" for its height, was a Buddhist theocracy led by a religious figure, the Dalai Lama. The kingdom, like Korea, Japan, and Vietnam, was a vassal state of the Chinese emperor, paying an annual tribute but not being directly administered by China. All that changed in 1950, when the PLA invaded and annexed Tibet, forcing the Dalai Lama to flee to India and bringing China's border right to the Indian subcontinent.
For two decades, the US through the CIA, the State Department, and the Department of Defense, ran operations in Tibet to prevent expansion of communism in the "autonomous region" and keep up hopes for an independent Tibet. In declassified documents, it has been shown that senior US administration members saw Tibet through two lenses: first, China's view that control of Tibet would give it a buffer zone in case western powers chose to invade China via India; and second, the American view that China and the Soviet Union would use Tibet as a staging ground to invade South and West Asia if necessary. In either case, an independent Tibet was considered the best means of maintaining status quo.
The CIA program in Tibet involved training armed Tibetan resistance fighters as well as spreading anti-Communist propaganda, and began when Gyalo Thondup, the Dalai Lama's exiled brother, made contact with CIA operatives in India. At the height of the program, the CIA was spending almost $2 million a year. Fighters were trained both in the US as well as in a secret camp in the Nepal-Tibet border, and it is believed that it was these fighters that enabled the Dalai Lama to safely escape to India before he could be arrested by the PLA in 1959. Fighters also intercepted Chinese documents, proving to be a valuable source of intelligence into the world's most populous Communist-controlled country.
The Tibetan resistance was successful in holding back PLA forces in Tibet, who by 1960 numbered into tens of thousands and were facing huge costs and logistical challenges, but it led to the local civilian population facing harsh reprisals, including mass arrests and bombing of Tibetan Buddhist monasteries. Declassified documents also showed that Indian Prime Minister Nehru opposed any anti-Communist activities in India, only willing to support the Dalai Lama's right to practice his religion but not Tibetan independence. The CIA program in Tibet came to an abrupt halt in 1972, after the historic visit of US President Richard Nixon to China and normalization of ties between the two countries. Fighters were allegedly given INR 10,000 to buy land or start a business in India, and all support to Tibet was halted by order of the White House.
In his 1991 autobiography, the Dalai Lama criticized the CIA for supporting Tibet not because they cared about Tibet, but merely as a pawn in the Cold War.

2020.09.21 15:30 ithinkwellbefriends European dating- is it a cultural difference or is he not interested?

I (25F) have been seeing this German (31M) dude for the last three months. We go out like once or twice a week or so. He always tells me that he can’t wait to see me again, but seeing as he takes DAYS to text back, I’m a bit skeptical. We go on dates, but I can’t help but wonder if he sees us more as fwb despite the fact that he calls me his “American dating experience.” I am totally fine to keep things casual and would like to sleep with again, but it’s been over a week since we’ve last talked and he left me on read. Not sure if it’s worth swallowing my ego to reach out- not sure if dating over there is just more casual or if he’s just being polite and is genuinely not interested in me.

[Nutrition in cardiovascular prevention: should we change our approach after the PURE study?]

[Article in Italian]Andrea Poli 1Affiliations expand

Abstract

PURE (Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiology) is a large ongoing observational study, performed in a number of variously developed countries (mostly Asian urban or rural cohorts). In a recent publication, authors were unable to identify, in the PURE cohort, any unfavorable correlation between the dietary intake of total fat or saturated fats and the risk of cardiovascular events or all-cause death. These data are in substantial agreement with information obtained from European cohorts (e.g. the PREDIMED or EPIC studies), and with the results of two recent meta-analyses, but at odd with most of data collected in US cohorts, in which saturated fat intake still represents a significant risk factor for cardiovascular events. In order to try to understand the possible reason(s) of these discrepancies, this review takes into consideration the different sources of saturate fats in US (meats) and Europe (milk and dairy), and suggests that the direct effect of saturated fats on cardiovascular risk is most likely very small or negligible; future dietary recommendation will need to take into greater consideration foods rather than nutrients.

2020.09.21 15:19 91stAirborne [A3] [EU] [WW2] [RECRUITING] 91st Airborne: Beginner-friendly WW2-Airborne Unit is searching for new recruits for new campaign and second platoon

[A3] [EU] [WW2] [RECRUITING] 91st Airborne: Beginner-friendly WW2-Airborne Unit is searching for new recruits for new campaign and second platoon
tl;dr: WW2-Milsim Unit with emphasis on being beginner friendly and not too serious outside operations looking for more members for 2nd platoon. Apply through our forums if you´re interested!
Website (join forums to start recruitment process!): https://www.91st-airborne.com/
Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-SC60Avmy8
Here´s some pics so you get the idea:
FOB during Operation Atlas
2nd Squad, 1st Platoon, Fox Company, having a break from killing Krauts
Company HQ, Fox Company, grilling sausages
2nd Squad, 1st Platoon, Fox Company engaging dug in Germans in Operation Kronos
GENERAL INFORMATION: As you can see, we are a semi-professional WW2 Milsim unit that plays as US Paratroopers. We might be quite a new unit but we´re growing fast nevertheless. Currently Fox Company only consists of Company HQ and 1st Platoon with a Platoon HQ Section, 2 Rifle Squads and 1 Support/Heavy Weapon Squad. The 91st currently has roughly 40 members, attendance rates at the operations range between 20 - 30 players. We do aim for a full Company sized unit in the future, which means we roughly want to double our numbers. Another goal of the unit is to go through different eras as time goes on, so World War II will most likely be followed by Vietnam at one point (in the far future). While the unit itself is relatively new, that doesnt mean we are utterly inexpierienced. Our Company HQ brings tons of Milsim experience to the table and we do have several veterans of different, now disbanded units. However, we are quite open to absolute newcomers and at least half of our players haven´t been in a Milsim Unit before. We consider ourselves as a beginner friendly unit, so nobody will do the "Drill Sergeant" on you if you make a mistake. We´re currently looking for recruits to fill up a 2nd Platoon so that is where YOU come in! We are currently fighting in France, early in our European Campaign, so now is the perfect time to join!
LEADERSHIP SPIRIT: The 91st is led by the principle that, while we do act professionally and as realistic as possible during operations and training, after all we are NOT in the real US Army so we aren´t that rigid when we´re not on official stuff. While we are trying to be as professional as we are able to in the field, new players shouldn´t be afraid to join us. Our NCO´s and CO´s are not only selected by skill and competence, but by personality too. We do make sure that whoever is put in charge of a part of the unit is someone who is there for his guys and is always keen to help new players with problems they might have.
UNIT HISTORY: 91st Parachute Infantry Regiment, Fox Company: The 91st Airborne was formed on the 4th of July 1940 as an experimental unit to be dropped behind enemy lines and disrupt enemy communication and supply lines, Recruitment started on the 9th of September 1940 and the unit was designated the 91st Parachute Infantry Regiment. [CLASSIFIED] was chosen as the location for the training facility under the name Camp Roanoke. On the 29th of April the recruits were in, under the Command of Major D. Winters and his Captain B. Compton. Fox Company was the first to form. Unlike any other, this experimental unit had to meet the highest level of training as the soldiers were expected to fight without resupply for days as they jumped feet first into the chilly breeze of Axis occupied Europe. After the campaign in [CLASSIFIED] ended successfully, the 91st Airborne are currently fighting in France in the Western European Theatre of War.
WHAT WE DO: We play as US Paratroopers in WW2, which means that the missions revolve around infantry based combat with little supplies. But the supply-situation is by far not the only difficulty we are facing during operations, since with the lack of any modern equipment, you´ll get challenged in ways you have never before. Because of that, there is a mandatory Basic Combat Training (BCT) that recruits will have to attend before they earn their Jump Wings and can join us in operations. It covers 3 phases that can be done on different dates since the training itself can be time-consuming and we see that recruits might have other plans. BCT Covers all the techniques, tactics and tools that are not part of your standard Arma III experience because of the setting or because they were added by mods. This includes but is not limited to: Our very own Code of Conduct, weapon and equipment familiarisation, formations and reaction to enemy fire, urban combat training, ACE and Enhanced Movement Mod familiarisation, Navigation without map markers or GPS and of course jumping and landing procedures. The BCT can be longer or shorter, depending on how familiar you are with the information provided. This ensures that you know the tools and tactics we use to fight and win our battles. Once BCT is completed, you are considered a full and equally respected member of the 91st Airborne. The BCT might be followed by a short instruction if you wish to play as a specialist role like medic, but other than that there are no mandatory trainings that you need to do before you can join us in actual operations. There are, however, Platoon and Squad level live fire trainings if the Platoon HQ or the Squad Leader thinks, his or her group could use some excercise in certain areas. Operations revolve typically around a single target that needs to be taken, with several secondary targets along the way. Primary targets can be villages, cities, strategically valuable positions or enemy officers we need to capture. Our excellent mission makers make sure that the missions are always balanced with the number of attending players and diverse in their setting and objectives while being part of a coherent campaign so it never get´s boring or frustrating. These operations are then, again, embedded into an consistent campaign where the outcome of our operations affect the following missions directly and indirectly.
WHAT WE DO OFFER:
A welcoming, friendly environment: We would rather see ourselves as a group of friends than a Milsim Unit if we are not on operations or official training.
Professional Operations: That however does not mean our operations devolve to a band of headless chicken running around and probably shooting each other. Both the mission files and the execution are as professional as it gets
Training that fits the needs of the recruits: If you´re a seasoned player we will try or best not to bore you, if it is your first time ever playing Arma we will make sure to help you getting to know everything you need
Promotions based on skill and character: While a candidate for a NCO or CO position has to show that he is fit for said rank, that is not limited to an understanding of tactics and other game-related topics. A candidate also must have a certain character, he has to have an open ear for the game-related problems of his men and has to be helpful and not belittling. The NCO´s and CO´s job is first and foremost to ensure that everybody enjoys the experience.
A new gameplay experience: The setting and the restrictions it brings as well as the mods we use to add tools create a rather unique experience that differs from your standard Arma III gameplay. The lack of equipment like GPS, NVGs or Scopes and Supressors as well as the added realism through mods like ACE and Enhanced Movement come together in a mix that might look hard but leads to an immersive and addictive experience that you don´t want to miss again after you´ve done your first operation.
Fun Ops: Outside of our regular official Operations and Platoon Trainings, we do have a lot of Fun Ops. Dedicated Events are planned and held on Sundays whenever the mission makers got the spare time to prepare them. Apart from that we also play fun WW2-related gamemodes on the server when no mission or training is being held. For now we got a resistance scenario called "Vindicta" going, which is great fun and comes with era appropriate equipment and enemies.
Flexibility on roles: While you can apply for a specialist slot, that doesnt mean you´ll only get to play as a rifleman when there are no vacant slots left. We do offer specialist trainings for all the different roles and encourage our squad members to play as different roles so things dont get boring. So switching classes with a squadmate or filling in for a medic who´s on vacation is absolutely possible and very much encouraged.
WHAT WE DO EXPECT:
- A legal copy of Arma III, no DLC´s required as of now
- Being 17+ (exceptions are possible, depends on maturity)
- Your willingness to learn and to follow orders
- Some knowledge of the english language. Since many of our members are not native speakers however, there is no need for perfect english, we just have to understand each other. By the way, be aware that the author of this text is no native speaker, so sorry for any errors I made along the way
- A working microphone
- To respect your fellow paratroopers and in return to be respected
- A sense of humour is helpful
- Empathy towards new players, we will not tolerate anyone belittling someone else because of his lack of experience
- Some level of commitment, especially from players who play in other units as well. There´s no mandatory attendance rules when real life stuff happens, but we will not commit to someone who does not want to commit to us. We are, after all, a unit and not some sort of backup plan. So please do only apply if you actually want to join us. If you just want to have a look first, i can send you links to tons of video material from different operations.
ROLES: The 91st Airborne do offer quite a few roles which work together like cogs in a wheel. The roles are as follows:
- Rifleman
- Autorifleman
- Machine Gunner
- Ammo Bearer
- AT Specialist
- Radioman
- Medic
Apart from that, there is a number of CO and NCO-Positions which you can be chosen for provided that a position is vacant and that you prove yourself character and skill-wise.
OPERATION AND TRAINING SCHEDULE: As of now Operations start on Saturday 18:00 BST. Most of our Units members are from all around Europe so we schedule operations and trainings with that in mind. However, if you´ve got no problem with that fact, you are absolutely welcome in the 91st, wherever you might live. BCT Dates will be provided depending on how many recruits there are. As of now, Thursday is reserved for Platoon Excercises. If you can not attend our operations or excercises, we ask you to tell your Squad Leaders so they can relay that information to Company HQ. Keep in mind, the Operations need to be balanced to the number of players that will be attending so that information is vital.
HOW DO I JOIN? To be a part of the unit you just need to join our Forums: https://www.91st-airborne.com/forums/ . There you can fill in your (very short) application form and a staff member will be in touch with you after that to arrange a short interview on our recruitment discord. If you pass this small hurdle, we´ll tell you when the next Basic Combat Training sessions will be.
We only do Basic Combat Trainings for serious applicants, so please make up your mind before you decide to join us. While we do not generally reject people who already play in another unit and we don´t have mandatory attendance rules when real life clashes with your wish to play arma, we will not commit to someone who is not willing to show the same commitment to our unit. Doing a basic training for someone who doesnt wish to join after all is just wasting the time of the applicant and the trainers alike.
After you´ve passed the interview phase and the BCT you earned your jump wings and are considered a full member of the unit with the rank of Pvt. You´ll then be assigned to a squad with your role preferences in mind. After a short probation time you can start to rise up in the ranks of the 91st Airborne.
